The winner of the first ever UK Pro Modified Championship, this is the car!! Built by Clive Bond at Ultimate Racecars, a purpose built car that did what is now says in its more recent paintscheme – 100% Whoopass!!

Originally named Hellraiser and driven by Dave Mingay nicknamed Ming the Merciless. This Chevy Monza was all conquering, running down into the 7’s with a PB of 7.76 @ 179mph. Acquired from Ashley Bell in 2004 when it was running 9.80 flat out naturally aspirated, needing nitrous to hit an 8.90 et which was required to be in Super Pro ET. Paul Marston and Gary Springford of Drag Race Engineering then embarked on a 5 year development of the Monza to unlock its true potential. Being that it had Jeff Bull power in the form of a 477ci BBC and a two speed transmission, it had all the ingredients but needed careful tuning.
The modifications that were performed make for a long long list but here are a few. The classis had to be stiffened as the Monza broke 3 Transmission cases last year Ashley ran it. The axle had to be repositioned as the pinion angle was wrong. The motor was as solid as a rock but was refined and eventually converted to alcohol and had the CORRECT spark plugs fitted!! I wont go into detail but we did in fact manage to get the Monza to run well with a fuel tank in the back and the belt driven pump in the front. They all said it could not be done and they were nearly right but we got it done in the end!!

Rear shocks changed, convertors changed to suit, tyres, Transmission, etc. All in the quest to make it work properly, culminating in the worlds most famous axle explosion (see youtube) this little Monza is now working very well, running in the 8.70’s with exactly the same motor that saw it run 9.80 flat out. So the lesson to learn from that is simple. Work with what you have, understand it, look at the data and learn. Throwing money at things does not work nearly as well as understanding what the car needs and giving it.

This great car has won numerous events in Super Gas and Super Comp and Super Pro and Pro, Heads Up Quick 8 at North Weald, etc and qualified No1 many times. Probably the best know will be winning the very first 64 car field in Super Pro at Santa Pods European Finals in 2013.

Not just are its achievements impressive, it is by anyones standards a great car to drive, it’s a real handful, but with a skilful driver a real sense of achievement can be had from this amazing Racecar. Currently in 2015 Mad Mick Howling has been behind the wheel.

Well with this latest addition to the PMR stable of racecars having been bought in late 2014. Its difficult to know where to start. Built by Ray Miller at Miller Racecars, this car was known as the Ocean Potion Dragster driven by Vic Ferra of Brevard Cylinder Head, Port Canaveral Florida. Vic had won ALOT of money with this car, in both big bracket racing and in NHRA Super Comp. Vichas been a personal friend of Paul Marston for a very long time now, introduced to by Tony Morris of BLP. Now Paul has crewed on this Dragster whilst in the States when Vic won the Gatornationals back in 2009 and got to stand in the Winners Circle, which is a big deal over there.

Fast forward a few years and Vic bought a newer Dragster from another great racer Tim Hutcherson who was Vics racing buddy, so the Ocean Potion car sat unused till Tony Morris brokered a deal where Tony built a motor for it and the Dragster was sold turnkey to his brother in law Rene Kloss who is married to Tonys sister Andrea. They both live in Germany so after Rene flew over and tested and approved the Dragster it then went over to Germany in which Rene continued his success winning Hockenheim three years running in Super Comp, no mean achievement!!

Paul Marston and Rene Kloss were good friends thru Tony and Andrea and had met many times both in Florida and at Santa Pod. At the Main Event 2014 Rene and Andrea were visiting and Paul discovered that they were considering selling the Dragster to get another doorcar, which would allow them to compete at more tracks in Europe that were once behind the iron curtain. Being as Dragsters need a better track surface to work properly and safely a doorcar is more forgiving.

There was another racer interested in the car, so Paul made it known of his interest and gave the other racer until Hockenheim to purchase the car. Well that did not happen so Paul took delivery of the Dragster as a rolling chassis at the European Finals 2014.

Upon hearing that there was a Dragster back in the garage, Martin Curbishley expressed and interest in driving at the National Finals, so a thrash then ensued to get the Dragster ready, which it was and Martin duly won the event in Super Comp!! So the story continues. Paul Marston actually wanted to buy this Dragster when it went to Germany but the opportunity did not present itself but now it has and Paul is a very happy owner.

Yes this is the Dragster that was recently seen on Discovery Channel with Paul Teaching Idris Elba in his series Idris Elba No Limits. This Dragster also saw Steve Ashdown make his debut at the European Finals 2015 in Super Pro.

Grumpy’s Dodge

Driver: “Mad” Mick Howling
Class: ProET

Also used for passenger rides & to teach students how to drive a dragster. Purchased by Paul Marston in 1998 as a rolling chassis, Paul first entered National Event competition with this car. Paul Watson was crew chief, Big Chris Manning as crewman and John Ellis of C & S Racing supplied the power plant and sponsored the car. It took Paul Marston two seasons to taste his first success by winning the National Finals at Santa Pod in 1999.

At the time Grumpy’s Dodge was a no electronics racecar, no delay box, no throttle stop, just the skill of the driver and the car.

Super Gas was a real tough class back then, populated by Professor Al O’Conner, Terry Gibbs, Ragin Ray White, Brian Pateman, Physco Phil Drewitt, Kev Moore, Sean Saunders, Paul Letchford, Big Jim Magee, Pete ‘Up in smoke’ White, Roger ‘Snow White’ Butterworth, Tim Adams, Cool Hand Luke Ramage and Jeff ‘in the red’ Bull.

Grumpy’s Dodge is one of the longest serving and most well known cars on the UK drag racing doorslammer scene. Previously campaigned by Paul ‘Grumpy’ Watson who won back to back Super Gas National Championships. More recently PMR Drag Race School instructor Mick Howling won the 2009 National Championship in Pro. ET and Super Gas, it is one of the school cars that members of the public are taught to drive in or be blasted down the track for the ride of their lives during numerous weekends every year. This has at times been the hardest working car in UK drag racing, completing over 250 passes every year.

Over the years Grumpy’s Dodge has been refined and modernised so she remains a competitive package. But throughout this process, we have been respectful and careful so as not to alter the outside appearance. Over the years over 400lbs of weight has been removed to take her from 2880lbs down to a svelte 2420lbs. All the braking system has been upgraded, the motors are now fed alcohol as a race fuel instead of high octane racing gasoline. The fuel cell is now front mounted, the front bodywork is removable for better access and servicing.

Between 2010 and present day Grumpys Dodge has remained active with drivers such as Mad Mick Howling, Paul Marston, Amanda Cox and most recently Nick Curtis in UK Top Sportsman 2015 where Nick was No1 Qualifier with a 9.608 on a 9.60 dial in the fast bracket race. The event was cut short due to weather but Nick was still in and received his equal share of the prize fund.

ex-Pro Vauxhall Calibra

Driver: Paul Marston
Class: Super ProET, ProET

Bought as a complete car, this ex-Pro Modified Vauxhall Calibra was built at Hauser Race cars and probably only has just over 150 passes on it. The Calibra was campaigned by Paul Marston Racing in 2007 in Super Modified and in Super Pro ET.

In previous guise with a 555ci BBC and a powerglide transmission the Calibra ran a best of 8.14 @ 163mph, it always went arrow straight and has never had an aborted pass in its life. This is despite some monster wheelies as it launches.

Built at Hauser Race cars, this was one of twins both constructed at the time, the other Calibra became Dave Mingays Hellraiser IV UK Pro Mod Championship winning car, which then became John Ellis’s Lethal Pro Mod and after a brief spell in Greece it now runs in Top Door slammer in Scandinavia with a blown BAE motor and now runs a twin rail chassis.

The Calibra’s was constructed to be as light as possible, using chromoly tubing and to weigh 2350lbs wet with driver, this was easily achieved at Hauser Race car as when PMR ran the Calibra in Super Modified it weighed 2320lbs on the scales after a run. Since then the Calibra has been lightened even more by virtue of an all aluminium Donovan Block, a Mark Williams Aluminium third member, smaller new fuel cell, new much lighter radiator and fan assembly, new lightweight set of beadlock wheels. Until final assembly its difficult to predict what she will weigh but it will be a lot less.

The Calibra is a testament to Hauser Racing as with no changes the chassis still tech’d to 25.1E when chassis inspected to be Super Modified legal. So its fair to say this car was way ahead of its time. There are some real neat tricks that are not apparent fully until you really start looking at it in more detail, IE using the Firewall as the Dashboard for mounting all the instrument’s, so you save the weight of the supports and the weight of a dash, the drivers position is of particular note. The driver sits so low and so far back it looks impossible to get in the car, also the position of the steering column and steering wheel is very low, this is done to maximise the drivers vision due to the seat position. All very clever stuff, deceptively simple but very effective, using the weight of the driver as low as possible to aid stability at speed. Even the body style comes into play, when it was debuted, the Calibra had the lowest co-drag efficiently of any production car at .031.

Having now been completely disassembled, the Calibra was updated with a made to measure hood scoop and bonnet assembly, the rear wing was also replaced with a hand made item, not a bolt on kit form piece so as it kept the lines of the Calibra and would create only downforce as required not drag.

Paintwork and recolouring the entire chassis and body was entrusted to Curbishley Automotive refinishing, with the chassis being finished in Satin Gunmetal Grey and the bodywork in Blue Diamond White.

Motor assembly will be taken care of most likely between Gary Springford at Drag Race Engineering with Paul Marston and final assembly will also take place at Drag Race Engineering, which is where the Calibra currently resides.

Ford Cortina

Driver: Paul Marston
Class: ProET

If you want to add this text to the page and the link to the blog, unless you want me to send you the whole blog? Sometimes opportunities just present themselves which are just too good to pass up. This Cortina is one of those opportunities.

Built as an ongoing project over the past 20 years by its previous owner, I have watched this car grow and grow to its current spec, which now makes it potentially one on the top 10 fastest doorslammers in the country. What makes this Cortina so special is the technology hiding inside a pretty innocent looking Cortina, I mean, its Cordoba Beige!!!

Under the skin currently sits around 1400hp. But the potential is there to easily get 2500hp, it has all the right parts, its data logged and has proven over the years to be a very reliable platform. So with our partner in the joint venture Comanche Racecars we will be developing this Cortina over the winter of 2016 and into the 2017 season. You can follow our progress via the blog on Eurodragster.

June 2016 Press Release on Eurodragster

An opportunity arose a few weeks ago to purchase a Racecar that of its type has been on the top of the bucket list for a long time. I did think that I was going to have to import one from the States as they are pretty thin on the ground in Blighty. Never the less when it came up I was interested enough to go look see. Now it is fair to say that this will be a very long term project as the Racecar will need to be completely repurposed before it can be used but I could see the potential and comes with a great pedigree. The car in question is Jon ‘Moose’ Hollingworths Street Eliminator Twin Turbo Big Block powered Mk5 Cortina, a deal was done and it now resides at PMR HQ in Romford.

Its Bill Felstead from Fester Racecars fault really that I bought it, as Bill has always been harking on that with so much power you need a lot of control. It must be fuel injected, small big block, 88mm Turbos, data logger, etc, etc. To put it simply this Cortina has it all, in fact its very similar although not as powerful as fellow Top Sportsman competitor and former title sponsor Matt Wrights mighty Rolls Royce.
It ticked all the boxes, plus it receives technical support from John Sleath Racecars. John Sleath Racecars has built, designed, mapped, developed and supported the Cortina all its life. I am pleased to say that this will continue and we are looking forward to working with John Sleath Racecars with this project.
The aim of the project is simply – To remove weight that is now not required and see how fast it can go with slicks and a wheelie bar. There is no rush or agenda as I honestly did not expect to be given this wonderful opportunity. It costs nothing to think and before we start on this one, it will receive a lot of thought before any firm decisions are made.

This car will be a challenge as our knowledge of Turbo cars although not non existent, this is a whole different level. It will be a fascinating journey.

November 2016 Press Release on Eurodragster

CORTINA BACK ON TRACK

Any eagle eyed followers of Eurodragster and attendees would have seen a certain Cordoba Beige Mk5 Twin 88mm Turbo, fuel injected big block Ford Cortina at the very last RWYB of the season at Santa Pod last Sunday. There are pics in the Sunday RWYB Gallery. There is also a short video clip of the launch and a super slo-mo courtesy of Aaron Springford on our PMR FB page.

After sustaining a drivetrain failure at the Open Sport Nationals at SCR in August. It has taken a while to get all the parts and pieces back together. This was due to it being a new Racecar to us and although we were fairly sure it would break something at the Open Sports Nats we did no know what, so did not have spares readily available. FYI it broke a rear UJ which damaged the Axle Yoke, destroyed the Propshaft and first gear in the Transmission. The spares situation is now remedied and the drivetrain is now a lot stronger. The simple reason why it broke was the Cortina had never seen slicks before, so we figured the grip would be the downfall and we were right.

All we intended to achieve on Sunday RWYB was to get a couple of hits with the correct launch boost and see if it broke anything else. Well it didn’t break anything and on the two hits we got a best of 1.25 60ft with it still turning the tyres a little. On the second hit Paul got it out to 330ft under power but it overpowered the track and started skating pretty bad before the 1/8th mile so wisely Paul clicked it. This now gives us a solid platform to build on, there is a lot to do with the Cortina over the winter months. But before we did any of that we wanted to find out what the first incremental’s were in its current guise. The tune will stay the same when we return to the track next season initially, just upgrades in other areas will be taken care of. There is no point in adding more power until you can use what you have currently, properly and efficiently first.

Just to keep you feeling warm over the winter you can watch us freeze and monitor our progress with a new blog that will go live on Eurodragster over the next week or so and WILL BE regularly updated over the off season.

Meanwhile special thanks go out to Bill and Luke at Comanche Racecars, who have been instrumental in moving this project forward. Chris Issaccs at CIRC, Gary and Aaron Springford at DRE, Terry Robbins at RRC, Eric Seccur at JW Performance Transmissions, all the PMR Crew, especially the Crewchief and Sefton Whitlock who always do a superb job. Eurodragster of course for being who you are. Special mention to Dave Warren and the rest of the Santa Pod Track Crew for all their track prep efforts, much appreciated and does not go unnoticed by us.
